HASELOR CHURCHYARD SURVEY

A record of the inscriptions, on the the gravestones in Haselor Churchyard and the memorial plaques in the church.

TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN LOVING MEMORY OF RICHARD HEMING OF BENTLEY MANOR BORN 10 MAR 1810.

DIED 9 OCT 1891 HIS ELDEST DAUGHTER MAUDE CHEAPE ERECTED THIS WINDOW A D 1893

The inscription above is carved into the stone framework of the East Window.

Rabbits under the gravestones, caused this problem.
This is the difference that I made, cleaning the gravestones, when recording the inscriptions on them.

A letter of the alphabet is shown against each surname in this survey and the corresponding letter can be found on the map to show the area of burial. If a letter and a number are shown, then the corresponding number on the map gives a more accurate place of burial. If the area letter is printed in blue, then a picture of the gravestone can be found on the website.

All surnames are in capital letters to distinguish against family surnames that are used as first names.

All the gravestone inscriptions were recorded in 2009, except for the later gravestones, up to 2023

Cornelius Griffin, Vicar of Haselor (1846-1867)

Father’s predecessor at Haselor must have been a curious and unbalanced man, and to hear about his habits and idiosyncrasies would fill us with an astonished fascination. He lived, apparently in a room of a cottage belonging to a widow, close to where the Vicarage now stands. He shared his room with the woman’s son, but varied his habitat by living part of the time in the vestry. Here he housed his own coffin, and kept a store of food and other treasures in it.

The arrow points to where the coffin was pushed in from outside. GRIFFIN name on the stone.

He always expressed a wish to be buried in church, but by the time his strange ministry came to an end, a law had been passed forbidding interment in churches. However, the resourceful Griffin had made his plans, and one can see to this day the place where, according to his instructions, he was pushed in from outside through an alcove under the north window, and where his name is engraved on the stone in the wall. My eldest sister who played the organ and practised during the week declared she could always smell ‘old Griffin’ when she passed up or down the aisle. Perhaps this was not a mere flight of fancy, as my mother, soon after going to Haselor, took a Colonel and Mrs Childs to look at the church, and all exclaimed at the unpleasant smell. Upon recounting the incident to various parishioners my mother was assured that it was undoubtedly the corpse of the previous vicar making itself felt.

Extracts from “Life at Haselor Vicarage” by Lt Colonel William Sykes (1867-1950), 3rd son of the Rev. John Heath Sykes, Vicar of Haselor, 1867-1912.

On Seeing A Ghost

Two versions of the same story.

Anthony Knight, the owner of the cider-mill, on one occasion had wandered over Church Hill and taken part in a pigeon-shooting competition at the back of the Crown.  Returning home through the churchyard in the small hours, as he rounded the east end of the church, he saw a ghost with arms outspread apparently holding him up.  With ready wit he slipped a couple of cartridges into the gun he was carrying, fired both barrels at the apparition and making a detour arrived home shaken but safely.  The following morning disclosed the fact that Anthony had well and truly peppered a white marble cross which had been erected near the pathway.  Sad to relate that the relict of the deceased demanded and obtained damages for the outrage!

Extracts from “Corners of the Earth” by Francis (Frank) William Sykes (1864-1945), eldest son of the Rev. John Heath Sykes, Vicar of Haselor, 1867-1912.

One old man who used to live in a cottage beside the church, and furthest from the village, had to walk through the churchyard on his way back from the ‘local’. He invariably carried a loaded muzzle gun. One night he was coming home through the churchyard, and as he rounded the corner of the church by the east window, he saw a strange white spectre near the wicket gate through which he would have to pass. Up went his gun and a shot rang out on the still air. The whiten head toppled to the ground, but the sound was too substantial for the substance of a ghost. He approached with wariness the object of his marksmanship, and found that he had blown off the head-shaped top of a newly erected tombstone. For decades it has lain in the grass with the shot mark on it.

Extracts from “Life at Haselor Vicarage” by Lt Colonel William Sykes (1867-1950), 3rd son of the Rev. John Heath Sykes, Vicar of Haselor, 1867-1912.

There are three lead plaques on the lead roof, at the top of the tower. Two plaques have been saved from the previous lead roof. The oldest inscription is, ‘H. LANE, Plumber, Campden, 1844’.

On the newest one, with the latest roof, ‘W. J. SHILTON, RECAST, 1999, LEICESTER’.

The plaque with the name ‘F.W.SYKES 1880.’ (Francis William Sykes) would not have been a roof repair but the vicar’s son writing his name there! In his book, he says ‘On a certain Sunday afternoon just before service, two of us climbed up through the belfry on to the top of the tower for the purpose of cutting our initials on the lead-covered roof.  Fred (brother) kept cave whilst I worked away at the job on hand.  Presently Fred whistled a warning, having spotted the Guvnor in cap and gown, coming through the churchyard gate, and hurried down without delay leaving me to shut the trapdoor.  It was important that the Guvnor should not be aware of the fact of our escapade, as it was against orders and the consequences entailed were easy to predict’.

‘F.W. SYKES 1880’ was sixteen years old when he made this plaque. This was a later addition to the cutting of his initials before a Sunday afternoon service.

The full story on his return from the tower, is from Life at Haselor Vicarage’ in the 19th century’ by William & Francis (Frank) Sykes, sons of the Rev. John Heath Sykes, Vicar of Haselor, 1867-1912.

These inscriptions can be seen near the top of the tower, facing south.

The inscription on the left and smallest bell weighing 5½ cwt, says, ‘H.B. 1662  CANTATE DOMINO  CANTICUM  NOVUM’, which means ‘Sing unto the Lord a new song’. It also says, ‘VOCO  AUDITE  VENITE’, which means, ‘I call; hear and come’. Also, ‘ECAST  1902  JOHN  HEATH  SYKES,  VICAR.  THEO  BOMFORD,  JOSEPH  MORRIS  CHURCHWARDENS’.

The inscription on the nearest bell weighing 8½ cwt, says, ‘BE  YT  KNOWNE  TO  ALL  THAT  DOTH  ME  SEE  THAT  NEWCOMBE  OF LEICESTER  MADE  MEE  1610’.

A farmer's son, Percy Tunnicliffe Cowley, expresses something of the spirit of the place in a few touching lines which I (Francis Sykes) am glad to have saved from oblivion.  Here they are. The grave of Percy Tunnicliffe Cowley's parents.

HASELOR

That's where I played in childhood's happy days
In country lanes with country children's ways,

And now

Asleep together in the grave they lie.

The sun is sinking blood red in the west,

The birds are singing day's sweet lullaby

While father and mother are at rest!

There in old Haselor churchyard on the hill

Away from busy life all calm and still

They lie asleep.

In loving remembrance of William-Tunnicliff COWLEY, [of Haselor] who died March 24th 1874 aged 42 years. “In the midst of life, We are in death.” … In loving remembrance of Rosa Matilda, widow of William-Tunnicliff COWLEY, who died June 7th 1889, aged 52 years. “He that believeth in me shall never die.”
